LITTLETON — July 14, 2025 — Littleton Select Board opens Shattuck Street speed-limit review and weighs steep public-safety costs from 550 King Street development. At the July 14 meeting, the board ordered a speed data study on Shattuck Street after four residents testified that the current 25-mile-per-hour limit — up from a 47-year-old 15-mile-per-hour school zone that lapsed when the street was repaved — poses risks to seniors, cyclists, and pedestrians who regularly walk in the road. Town Administrator James A. Duggan separately presented department-head projections estimating that the roughly 1,000-unit mixed-use buildout at 550 King Street and 410 Great Road would generate 900 to 950 additional annual emergency calls, require eight new firefighters and a potential second fire station, and add six to ten police officers at a cost of $660,000 to $960,000 — against estimated net annual revenue of approximately $3 million, not including hotel and meals tax, which totaled $675,000 in fiscal year 2025. The board also approved a $116,400 landfill post-closure monitoring contract with Tighe and Bond and began discussions toward a formal Tax Increment Financing policy framework, with members citing prior local TIFs for Patriot, Potpourri, and Curtis Strauss as cautionary and instructive precedents.
