Littleton School Committee Endorses Second Full-Time School Resource Officer

LITTLETON -- December 12, 2024, Littleton School Committee informally approves a second full-time school resource officer and receives a $1.4 million capital request. Police Chief Matt Canard told the committee Thursday that the district's lone resource officer, Detective Meg Wizinski, has logged close to 100 calls for service since January and lacks time for critical safety-planning work across four schools; the committee gave informal approval, no formal vote required, to hire Officer Brian Jones, currently part-time, as a second full-time SRO funded within the school department's existing budget, while the town continues to fund the first. Business Manager Steve Venuti presented the FY2026 capital plan, headlined by a $1 million high school boiler replacement, the original cast-iron boilers are obsolete and replacement parts are no longer reliably available, alongside $225,000 for middle school HVAC units, $120,000 for track resurfacing (with $40,000 already in hand from a Littleton Track Organization donation), and $55,000 for accessibility and sidewalk repairs at Russell Street School. The committee also accepted nine updated district financial and purchasing policies on first reading, with second reading set for January 9.
