Littleton Select Board Delays Long Lake Safety Zone Vote, Advances School Roof Grant Application

LITTLETON — April 7, 2025 — Littleton Select Board backs Long Lake safety zone in principle but delays formal vote until full board is seated. Three members present at the April 7 meeting — Chair Mark, Karen, and remote participant Matthew — all expressed support for designating Lakeshore Drive and adjacent roads near Long Lake as a 20-mile-per-hour safety zone, following a detailed presentation by resident Rob Brown of 25 Juniper Road, who submitted a petition signed by 100 of 139 nearby households and cited pedestrian injury statistics showing sharply rising harm rates at speeds above 20 mph. Estimated cost for five sign postings is $1,250 to $2,000, at $250 per posting as estimated by DPW Director Steve Yanly. The board also voted 3-0 to authorize submission of a Statement of Interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for replacement of Littleton High School's roof and two cast-iron boilers before the April 11 filing deadline, a project planned to be funded through the capital stabilization fund if approved. The Affordable Housing Trust reported $1.1 million in reserve as of January 14, with a Habitat for Humanity duplex under contract at Tahadawan Road and a request for proposals pending for a three-to-four-unit development at the five-acre Durkee Farm property on Foster Street.
