Littleton fire chief details incident command system, mutual aid plans

Littleton Fire Chief Steele McCurdy previews an Oct. 4 open house while detailing how his department handles major emergencies. On the town's "01460 On The Go!" community-access podcast, McCurdy told host Karen Morrison the department plans for hazardous materials calls, wildfires, structure fires and rail-related risks along Littleton's train corridor. He described a scalable incident command system he compared to "an orchestra," with himself typically serving as incident commander overseeing three to five direct reports.
McCurdy estimated firefighters log close to 200 training hours annually and said mutual aid can put "hundreds of firefighters in town" within 30 minutes. He detailed the volunteer CERT team's role supporting shelters, triathlon parking and firefighter rehab, and invited residents to the Oct. 4 open house, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring CERT, dispatchers, state DCR and HAZMAT representatives, and fire apparatus.
