Littleton Select Board Approves Menorah Display on Town Common in 4-1 Vote

LITTLETON — December 8, 2025 — Littleton Select Board approves Hanukkah menorah display on town common in split vote. The board voted 4-1 Monday to permit a six-foot menorah on the lower common from December 14 through December 22, with member Chuck casting the lone dissenting vote, citing Establishment Clause concerns and the risk of setting precedent for future religious display requests. Rabbi Poulter of the Chabad center at 148 Great Road told the board that similar disputes have been litigated extensively and that displays have been upheld nearly universally. A companion vote to allow a Hanukkah celebration on the common December 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. passed unanimously. In a separate 3-2 vote — with members Chuck and Mark opposed — the board closed town hall on December 26, with Chair Karen Morrison, Gary, and Matthew in the majority. The board also unanimously approved a new common victualer license for J&J's Littleton Cafe at 341 King Street, accepted a $60,000 state earmark to update the 2019 Commercial Revitalization Roadmap, and tabled a union side letter for transfer station employees after members identified a potential discrepancy in paid lunch-break accounting going back to July.
