Littleton School Committee Approves Track Maintenance Pact, Hears Graffiti Update

LITTLETON — March 31, 2022 — Littleton School Committee approves track maintenance agreement and hears ongoing racist graffiti investigation update. The committee unanimously approved a five-year memorandum of understanding with the Littleton Road Race and Track Organization, which has been fundraising for the Russell Street School track for years and is prepared to transfer funds to a dedicated school department account for track maintenance and eventual resurfacing; because the initial transfer exceeds $5,000, a separate acceptance vote will be required at a future meeting. Middle School Principal Jason Everhart reported that an investigation into racist graffiti found in a boys' bathroom roughly three weeks earlier was still open after interviews with dozens of students, video review, and family outreach, telling the committee, "If it takes a month or two months or six months, we are going to resolve this." Director of Teaching and Learning Beth Steele briefed the committee on the district's $49,500 Student Opportunity Act allocation, now directed entirely toward selecting a new elementary math curriculum after state guidance changes eliminated a planned personnel expenditure. The committee also unanimously approved relocating a student-designed pergola project to an area adjacent to the Littleton High School cafeteria doors, a change proposed by 2019 alumnus and UMass Amherst landscape architecture student Andrew Riley.
