Littleton School Committee Approves Phased Mask-Optional Plan Starting March 7

LITTLETON — February 10, 2022 — Littleton School Committee sets phased mask-optional schedule for remaining schools, hears Diwali petition. The committee reached consensus Thursday to extend mask-optional policies to Littleton Middle School and Russell Street School on or around March 7, with Shaker Lane Lane tentatively targeted for March 14, following the high school's launch of the program February 8. Superintendent Dr. Kelly Clinchy cautioned against moving too quickly, noting only two high school teachers had removed masks as of meeting night and that 19.5 percent of students and staff were exercising the option. Public health coordinator Lynn reported 999 student opt-ins and 144 staff opt-ins to the district's pooled COVID testing program, a combined participation rate of roughly 51 percent out of a $22,590,000 operating budget. The committee also heard a student-led petition from the high school DEI club and eighth grader Aria Wachisunder calling for Diwali to be added to the school calendar, backed by 311 student signatures and 417 community signatures, with a formal vote set for March 3.
