Littleton Board of Health Approves Septic Variances, Continues Middlesex Street Hearing

LITTLETON — January 10, 2024 — Littleton Board of Health clears four septic variances for one failing system and sends a second back for more study. The board voted 4-0 at its January 10 meeting to approve variances allowing a new pressurized geomat leaching system at 219 Tehadawan Road, where an aging cesspool has been backing sewage into the house; engineer Kirk Fitzpatrick of Civil Solutions received approval to reduce the groundwater offset from four to three feet, use a sieve analysis in place of a percolation test, allow less than 12-inch tank inlet-outlet separation above groundwater, and place fill within 10 feet of the property line. A second hearing, for 18 Middlesex Street, was continued 4-0 to January 24 after members Kevin Baker, Kevin Davis, and Matt Wason pressed engineer Chris Stoddard to demonstrate whether secondary wastewater treatment could fit on the sub-two-tenths-of-an-acre lot before the board would consider a two-foot groundwater offset reduction. Board member Wason's infectious-disease update showed 11 local COVID cases in the past week, MWRA wastewater indicators "launching straight up," and only 28.5 percent of Littleton residents vaccinated for the current COVID season.
